The Great Pumpkin Give-Away

The Scarborough Bluffs Community Association for the past 3 years has hosted a Pumpkin Parade at Sandown Park on November 1st. We waited patiently while the City of Toronto reviewed the rules for Halloween festivities and what that would look like for children this year. Unfortunately, the City announced that they don’t recommend children go out Trick or Treating door to door. It should also be known that earlier in the month, the City had cancelled all City park permits for parades.

The SBCA Board met to discuss our options to support a Pumpkin Parade. We concluded that we would host a Virtual Parade. We would encourage families to send in photo’s of their carved pumpkins, costumes and Halloween decorations to Halloween@sbca.ca where they will be assembled into a virtual parade to be held online.

To help with this initiative, the Scarborough Bluffs Community Association has partnered with Freshco (Victoria Pk/Gerrard store), the Scarborough Food Security Initiative and the Bluffs Food Bank to distribute FREE pumpkins to the community.

The approach of Christmas and winter, also led our thinking in the direction of how we could come together as a community to support the Food Banks. Winter is a difficult season for families in need. Building on the most recent Food Drive led by Councillor Crawford, the SBCA also hosted a food drive outside the SFSI Food Bank located at 2229 Kingston Road on Thursday, October 22nd.

We would like to acknowledge Tony and Claudia Cornacchia of Fallingbrook Market for another donation of apples for the Food Banks and special thanks to Rizuan Rahman, Mohashen Miah, Hossain Sumon, and Tarunjit Singh who graciously gave of their time to help with the pick-up and delivery of the pumpkins.

The SBCA felt that kids deserve to be kids and they could really use support now as we head back into a Stage Two Covid-19 lockdown.

We encourage you to be creative this year and have fun with your kids for Halloween. Carve those pumpkins, decorate your house!! And certainly, don’t forget to send us your photos!!
