It’s been a long tiring 20 months of lockdown, masks, delivery services, online schooling and working from home. As spring approached and summer took hold, we eagerly went outside and started tending to our gardens. In its third year of success and in partnership with the Birchcliff Garden Club, the Scarborough Bluffs Community Association (SBCA), presented a “Fun and Friendly” Residential Front Yard Garden Contest. The contest was open to all residents of Birch Cliff, Cliffside and Cliffcrest and highlighted our community’s beautiful front yard gardens.

This wonderful opportunity allowed participants to showcase their gardens and the hard work they’ve been putting in during the pandemic! For the first time this year, we also encouraged the community to promote pollinator and container gardens.
Judges consisted of members of the Birchcliff Garden Club and the Scarborough Bluffs Community Association. Judging took place in late August and the submitted gardens were a plethora of magical colours! You didn’t need to be an expert to enter – all levels of experience were welcomed.

We are delighted to announce this year’s 2021 Winners!
Photos were taken early September following the heat wave and unfortunately don’t show how beautiful and colourful the gardens were all summer.

Second Place: Hanna
McCutcheon, Brooklawn Ave.
Third Place: Patty Nagesher, Kingston Road

Residential Garden Winner Bruce Bowers had this to say:
“Gardening has for many years been a rewarding hobby for me providing many benefits and especially during the pandemic, has been very useful in helping one forget the depressing news! This is the forty seventh year I have been gardening here and it’s always been a great pleasure to see passers by and neighbors enjoying the view. We hope we can keep up our work for many more years!”

Judge Patricia McGill said it best: “Thanks for the opportunity to see so many gardens in our community that I would not otherwise have seen. Clearly many hours and a great deal of thought and effort has gone into the creation of these gardens, many of them new installations, so hooray for those gardeners taking their first step!”

The SBCA would like to thank all 25 participants who entered gardens in the contest. Without you we would not be able to bring the community together to celebrate our own little pocket of the City. We are proud to be able to offer these events in Southwest Scarborough and look forward to hosting more when we can come together again!
